They complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them. They belong in their fullness to Christ, Son of David. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: “The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. Father David Neuhaus explains the gifts of the Spirit as we pray to receive them. 13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus. In the Christian tradition, seven gifts are associated with the giving of the Holy Spirit, an idea well rooted in the Scriptures. 12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife and must manage his children and his household well. 11 In the same way, the women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything. 10 They must first be tested and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. 9 They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. 8 In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. 7 He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap. 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?) 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. ![]() 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect. 2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith./p> 6 They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.” 5 This proposal pleased the whole group. 3 Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. When members employ these spiritual gifts as faithful stewards of God's varied grace, the church is protected from the destructive influence of false doctrine, grows with a growth that is from God, and is built up in faith and love. Some members are called of God and endowed by the Spirit for functions recognized by the church in pastoral, evangelistic, apostolic, and teaching ministries particularly needed to equip the members for service, to build up the church to spiritual maturity, and to foster unity of the faith and knowledge of God. According to the Scriptures, these gifts include such ministries as faith, healing, prophecy, proclamation, teaching, administration, reconciliation, compassion, and self-sacrificing service and charity for the help and encouragement of people. Given by the agency of the Holy Spirit, who apportions to each member as He wills, the gifts provide all abilities and ministries needed by the church to fulfill its divinely ordained functions. God bestows upon all members of His church in every age spiritual gifts which each member is to employ in loving ministry for the common good of the church and of humanity. God gives us special gifts and talents so we can live fully for Him?
